In order to establish a new economic development model in which the balance between long-term stable growth and environmental protection is well set up, the world's major economies are vigorously implementing the ‘Green Policy' as well as China.
In 2009 DSM is (the 4th time) the no. 1 in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index thanks to its focus and impressive achievement in sustainable development.
DSM Anti-Infectives, as a proud member of DSM family, has successfully developed environmental friendly ‘green enzymatic technology' and applied to semi-synthetic penicillin and semi-synthetic cephalosporin production. As part of DSM's commitment to the Chinese market, this ‘green enzymatic technology' has been brought to China and used for the enzymatic Cefalexin production in DSM Zibo site.
DSMPureActives™ specifically refers to revolutionary, high quality and high purity antibiotics APIs made by DSM “green enzymatic technology". "Green enzymatic technology" is the technology developed by DSM adopting enzyme-biocatalysis into synthetic penicillins and semi-synthetic cephalosporins production. DSM is the first in the world to develop this technology and holds 58 patent families in this field which have been registered in many countries and regions of the world, including China. "Green enzymatic technology" is one of green innovations of DSM. In comparison with the traditional chemical process, the “Green enzymatic technology” distinguishs itself by many aspects, esp the following 4:
1) Special chemicals: The enzymatic processes distinguish themselves by an almost complete lack of special chemicals; all they need, apart from the main raw materials, is acids/bases and enzymes.
2) Usage and emission of organic solvents, 90% reduction: The use of organic solvents in the overall chemical process is mainly decided by MTC consumption with its relatively low recovery yield (assumed to be 82%).
The enzymatic processes display a low emission level due to the fact that the methanol used in the synthesis of the side-chain precursor is efficiently recycled (assumption 97%)The enzymatic process performs very well in this respect, with an emission level being 10 times as low as in the overall CFX process
3) The discharge of COD to water is reduced by 80%. It is rewarding to observe that the enzymatic processes perform much better than the chemical process in COD production
COD production is split up in two parts: the one associated with the production of the side-chain precursor and the one linked to the actual Cefalexin synthesis process. In the enzymatic process these two are largely integrated as far as waste production is concerned.
4) Thanks to the specificity of enzyme, the "green enzymatic technology" is able to improve the yield greatly and reduce impurities in final products significantly, so that the final product is purer and safer.
